MLS side Montreal Impact have signed a new three-year contract with defensive midfielder Samuel Piette. The club will also have the option to extend it to 2023.

The 25-year old French Canadian has been at the club since 2017. He has 76 games for Montreal with 4 assists to his name. Piette was a first-team regular last season, playing in 25 games.

Who is Samuel Piette?

The midfielder previously played in Spain for CD Izarra and Racing Ferrol. Earlier in his career, he was part of Fortuna Düsseldorf but enjoyed only two games (14 minutes) for the first team.

“We are very happy, as he is, to have found an agreement that shows mutual respect, as there was interest from both sides to reach this conclusion,” said Montreal sporting director Olivier Renard.

“We wanted Samuel to stay with the club and I want to thank him to have trust in our project. He will be able to continue his contribution on and off the field.”

Piette is a Canadian national with 45 games under his belt. Interesting fact: he’s participated in the last four Gold Cup tournaments.

Montreal Impact – Thierry Henry

The club changed three different managers since Piette has been at the club. The Canadian already expressed his support for new manager Thierry Henry’s move to Montreal Impact. He described it as the “biggest marketing announcement” Montreal could have made. The French legend took charge of Montreal and will lead the team from 2020.
