Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to return to his former club AC Milan, MLS Commissioner Don Garber confirmed.

The 38-year old international superstar has spent the last two years in LA Galaxy, where he’s currently managed an astounding 53 goals in 58 matches.

Zlatan goes back to Serie A at 38

Clearly, Zlatan has proved time and time again that age is just a number. His contract with LA Galaxy ends on the 31st of December this year, so he can re-join AC Milan in January.

“He is a 38-year-old guy who is being recruited by AC Milan, one of the top clubs in the world.” the MLS chief told ESPN.

“He has almost set records for the number of goals he’s scored in the last two years and is exciting on and off the field. He keeps our hands full but I’d love to see him back – that’s up to LA Galaxy. I’ve enjoyed the Zlatan moments, especially when he speaks to me in the third person,” Garber added.

During his first spell in AC Milan – between 2010 and 2012 – Zlatan scored 56 goals in 85 matches across all competitions, winning the Serie A (2010/2011) and becoming the top goalscorer of the league (2011/2012).

He then went on to French giants PSG, where he spent the next four years, before joining Manchester United in 2016.

Zlatan leaves MLS but left his mark

MLS chief Don Garber is hopeful that while Zlatan is leaving the league, other established names will follow his footsteps. He also acknowledged the good example that David Beckham set back when he was playing in LA Galaxy, convincing other superstars to come to the league.

“We saw Henry come to this league because he had a conversation with Beckham five or six years ago. David is out there speaking to lots of players and, just as importantly, he is very involved in the academy down at Miami,” Garber said about Beckham.

Beckham now owns a club in the US named Inter Miami which will debut in the MLS in 2020.

“They are recruiting young players and their academy has been open for a year now with a team that’s not playing until next year. They have a combination of young players and some international guys that David will bring in.”
