PSV have fired coach Mark van Bommel after a poor recent form, which has led the Eindhoven team to fourth place in the Eredivisie. PSV lost the derby to Feyenoord 3-1 on Sunday, leaving the team ten points off leaders Ajax and AZ Alkmaar.
PSV won just two of last twelve
Club legend van Bommel was appointed head coach in June 2018. PSV were very close to sealing the title last season, finishing just three points behind winners Ajax. Despite that, this season started on the wrong foot with the team winning just two of their last twelve games in all competitions. On top of that, the club was eliminated from the Europa League groups after heavy defeats by Sporting Lisbon (4-0) and LASK Linz (4-1).
The 42-year old manager refused to give up, even after the loss, saying: “Even if I have to fight the whole world, I’m not giving up.”
“PSV is a club where we try to help and support each other. That has been the case in recent months as well. The interests of the club have always come first. ‘The evaluation has ultimately resulted in this painful decision. We have done all we can as a group to turn the tide. Sadly it has not succeeded,” general director Toon Verbrands told the club’s website.
