Sergio Aguero was awarded the Premier League Player of the Month award for January, thus winning the prize for the seventh time in his career. This way, the Argentinian striker became the player to receive the most Player of the Month awards in history.

This is the third time he makes history this month after beating the record for most Premier League hat-tricks, scoring his 12th in a 6-1 win over Aston Villa. The striker also overcame Thierry Henry as the best foreign goalscorer in the Premier League with 180 goals.

The other nominees for the January best player award were Alisson, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Ayoze Perez, Jack Grealish, Jordan Henderson, and Jack Stephens.

Aguero surpasses Gerrard and Kane

Steven Gerrard, Harry Kane, and Sergio Aguero all had six Player of the Month awards up till recently, but now Aguero leads the charts on his own, grabbing his seventh.

He displayed exciting form in January after missing around a month of football through muscle injury. Aguero started bagging the goals on December 29 against Sheffield United and then added another six to his tally throughout January.

The Argentinian scored a hat-trick against Aston Villa, two in the Crystal Palace game, and put the ball behind the net once more against Sheffield United.

The 31-year old Man City striker first received the recognition in October 2013. It looks like he’s in top form around the start of the year, as this is the third time he’s selected as the best player for January. He also won it once for February, in 2019.
