Stephens named Sports Topic Manager at Orlando Sentinel April 22, 2009
Memo from Orlando Sentinel Managing Editor Mark Russell:
We are happy to announce that Tim Stephens will be the sports topic manager, the job formerly known as sports editor. Tim has been deputy sports editor for two years and has proven to be an aggressive editor with strong web skills who has elevated our coverage of the Magic and college sports. We’re excited he’s joining our senior editing team.
Tim starts the new job Monday, succeeding ESPN-bound Lynn Hoppes, whose last day is Friday.
Stephens, 39, joined the Sentinel in 2003 as a senior copy editor after a three-year stint as sports editor of the Birmingham Post-Herald in Alabama. In 2004, he was promoted to assistant sports editor to lead coverage of professional golf and high school sports, including the implementation of Varsity MyTeam for OrlandoSentinel.com and the creation of the Orlando Sentinel High School Sports Reporting Institute.
Stephens was named deputy sports editor in 2007 to lead coverage of the Magic and college sports. In his time at the Sentinel, Stephens has received both the Tribune Leadership and Tribune Values awards.
Before joining the Sentinel, Stephens spent eight years at the Post-Herald, rising from intern to sports editor of a section that won multiple APSE awards during his tenure.
