Northeast Region notes: NYT’s Drape, Rhoden honored Jan. 22, 2010
Joe Drape of The New York Times won the 2009 Media Eclipse Award for writing in the Feature/Enterprise category for “Despite Outcry, Derby Owners Fall Silent on Drugs for Horses," from the April 30 edition of the Times.
Times columnist William C. Rhoden was named a finalist for the New York Association of Black Journalists sports writing award for his June 17 column on Epiphanny Prince’s decision to turn pro after her junior season at Rutgers: "She’s Turning Pro, but Is It Progress?"
At The Hartford (Conn.) Courant….
Columnist Jeff Jacobs was inducted into the Thomas Green Club, recognizing his 25 years with The Courant. … Hartford’s Fox affiliate, also a Tribune Company, moved into the Courant’s building and the sports departments of Fox 61 and The Courant have merged. Both staffs work out of the same room, share ideas and work in both mediums.

The sports department won three first-place awards in the New England Associated Press News Executives Association contest.
Outdoors writer Travis Barrett (who left the company in October to work for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife) won first place in the Class III Sports feature or enterprise for his series on the Kennebec Land Trust called "Sense of Wonder." Copy editor Sandra Pooler won first place for Class III Sports page design for her page "Rambler Redemption" and Gary Hawkins won first place for Class III Sports columns.
