Former Tampa sports editor and columnist McEwen dead at 88 June 6, 2011

Tom McEwen, the former sports editor and columnist of the Tampa Tribune, died Sunday after a long battle with health issues. He was 88.

McEwen was honored by the Associated Press Sports Editors in 1993 as the Red Smith Award winner, the highest commendation for sports writing.

He was known for his omnipresent involvement in the Tampa sports community and for his relationships with industry power brokers. He was an accomplished and sought-after speaker for events of all kinds.

APSE will pay tribute to McEwen with a moment of silence at this month's Red Smith Award presentation during its summer conference in Boston.
