First of new AWSM webinars takes place Wednesday March 29, 2011
In an effort to help encourage dialogue about women’s sports, the Association for Women in Sports Media is introducing AWSMNow, a monthly series of free webinars about issues women face in sports today.
"At AWSM, we're always looking for ways to connect with our members and others who share our passion for sports, media and gender issues," AWSM President Amy Moritz said. "The AWSMNow series is a way to utilize technology to bring together our members and serves as another platform to help educate and create a dialogue on issues of the day."
The first panel “Commemorating Women in Sports” will take place on Wednesday, March 30 at 2 p.m. EST, and was specifically planned to act as a wrap up of Women’s History Month.
The panelists are an illustrious mix of iconic women from government, the media, and athletics:
* Russlyn Ali, Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of Education
* Christine Brennan, Columnist, USA Today
* Jackie Joyner Kersee, Olympic gold medalist, U.S. Track and Field
* Nancy Lieberman, current coach of the Texas Legends, basketball Hall-of-Famer, former WNBA player and coach, and the first woman to coach a pro men’s team.
* Mariel Zagunis, Olympic gold medalist, U.S. Fencing
Since Title IX was introduced in 1972, the number of women in every field of sports has grown exponentially. The webinar will take a look back at how far women’s sports has come since the very beginning and what challenges women in athletics still face today. Does the glass ceiling still exist? If so, what opportunities are still closed off to women in sports, and what’s the next frontier?
Webinar participants are also invited to bring their own questions for the panelists and participate in the discussion.
The AWSM executive board conceived the idea of a series of webinars to highlight pressing issues in women’s sports today, and to provide the media with an opportunity to interview some of the most recognizable names in women’s sports, all in one sitting.
Upcoming webinars will feature different panelists and address issues ranging from worklife balance and breast cancer awareness, to homosexuality in sports and equal access.
