APSE names top 10 newspaper Web sites over 1 million unique visitors Dec. 26, 2009

The Associated Press Sports Editors started honoring the best sports sections and the best sports writing in 1981.

With newspapers changing and the Web becoming a destination for breaking news and alternative forms of story telling, APSE decided it was the right time to start honoring the best newspaper sports Web sites.

There were two divisions judged by a panel of APSE members: under 1 million unique visitors during a month and over 1 million unique visitors during a month.

As is the case of the best sports sections judged by APSE, a top 10 and an honorable mention group of 10 were selected.

"The judges came away very impressed by the efforts evidenced on the day we randomly selected," said Gerry Ahern, Assistant Managing Editor for Yahoo! Sports. "From microsites for specific local teams and sports, to video, to blogs, to live chats, to breaking news, the editors clearly understand the importance of not only drawing, but trying to engage their audiences.

"Getting down to a top 20 in each category was very difficult. There’s a lot of great work being done."

APSE plans to add additional Web site categories to the annual contest.

APSE will judge section and writing categories starting March 7 in Kissimmee, Fla.

The top Web sites and other winners will be honored at APSE’s annual convention in Salt Lake City on June 26.
