“A look at our industry:” Things appear to be stabilizing for now, but what about the future? May 13, 2010

A new study finds that many news executives sense change for the better in their newsroom cultures today.
And, financially, Gannett reported a 50 percent jump in its first quarter profits, and several other companies got off to solid starts this year. Nevertheless, fewer than half of those executives surveyed by the Pew Center this spring said they are confident their operations will survive another 10 years without significant new sources of revenue.
Nearly a third said their operations are at risk in five years or less. We explore the future of the news business with four of the nation’s top experts — two leading editors, a top Gannett publisher and one of America’s foremost media industry analysts — in a must-attend general session at APSE’s annual convention, taking place June 23 to 26 in Salt Lake City.
“State of the Union: A look at our industry” is among sessions including “How to Write the Perfect Game Story,” Prep Coverage, Best Ideas and Watchdog Journalism.
The deadline for the $200 registration fee is June 1, and APSE members should have received registration forms and a listing of social activities in the mail. If you have not, e-mail Executive Director Jack Berninger at jackapse@aol.com or at 804-741-1565. To see an outline of convention events, click here.
In a change from past years, one registration fee allows multiple people from your organization to attend. Register for the hotel, the Marriott City Center, by calling 877-907-4491. The group code is APS (no E). Deadline is May 21.
Tim Franklin is the director of the National Sports Journalism Center at the Indiana University School of Journalism, and the Louis A. Weil, Jr. Endowed Chair. He was the editor of The Baltimore Sun, the Orlando Sentinel and The Indianapolis Star.
