University of Maryland sports ethics panel slated April 27 April 24, 2011
ESPN Vice President and Director of News Vince Doria, USA Today columnist Christine Brennan and Washington Post Sports Editor Matt Vita will be among the participants in a discussion of ethics in the sports media hosted by the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism on April 27 at 7 p.m., at the Richard Eaton Broadcast Theater in Knight Hall.
The discussion, to be moderated by Shirley Povich Professor and ESPN "Around the Horn" panelist Kevin Blackistone, also will include Washington Redskins Vice President Tony Wyllie, Merrill College ethics professor Diana Huffman and Merrill College Professor of the Practice George Solomon, the former Sports Editor of The Washington Post and ESPN's first ombudsman.
Among the topics to be discussed are recent guidelines established by ESPN regarding its announcing staff and commercial relationships; reporters and columnists attempting to juggle multi-responsibilities to newspapers, websites, television and radio stations; constantly changing relationships among reporters, sports teams and athletes; diversity in news organizations; and standards and practices in today's sports media.
The event is free and open to the public.
