Southeast Region meeting set for April 18 in Birmingham March 3, 2011
Here are the facts for the APSE Southeast Region meeting.
When: Monday, April 18
Where: Alabama Sports Hall of Fame building in Birmingham – 2150 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd.
Time: 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
10 a.m. Introductions by APSE Southeast Region chairman Jon Johnson of the Dothan Eagle.
10:20 – 11:20 a.m. The Cam Newton alleged pay-for-play scheme was the biggest story in college football this season. Rusty Hampton of the Jackson-Clarion Ledger, John Zenor of the Associated Press and Mike Szvetitz of the Opelika-Auburn News share how they covered the story.
11:30 -12:45 p.m. Lunch on your own. The Sheraton Hotel across the street offers several options.
1 p.m. – 2 p.m. SEC commissioner Mike Slive and associate commissioner Charles Bloom are scheduled to hold a Q&A session.
2:15 p.m – 3 p.m. Tommy Deas of the Tuscaloosa News discusses the newspaper’s 16-page weekly color tab which made its debut last fall and ran each Saturday during high school football season with prep game coverage, yardsticks, scores, next week’s schedule, etc.
3:15 p.m. – 4 p.m. Jon Johnson of the Dothan Eagle leads a roundtable on desk consolidation. More and more newspapers are now going to pagination centers to produce the layouts of the sections. A discussion on what’s needed to make the transition as smooth as possible.
4:15 p.m. – 5 p.m. APSE president and Knoxville News Sentinel sports editor Phil Kaplan closes with a session on how the sports department covers National Signing Day. Platforms included print, web, radio, television. Newspaper produced 8-page special section, more than 30 videos, and brought in 1.3 million page views.
