Newsday’s Hank Winnicki elected vice chair of Northeast Region Jan. 12, 2010

Hank Winnicki, Assistant Managing Editor for Sports at Newsday, has been elected vice chair of the Northeast Region.

He replaces Matt Pepin of Boston.com, who has become chair of the region.

Winnicki joined the Long Island-based paper in 2004 as the Night Sports Editor. He was named Sports Editor in August of 2006.

Before Newsday, Winnicki spent 11 years at the New York Daily News, where he started as a copy boy in 1993. He worked the agate desk, the copy desk and was named an Assistant Sports Editor in 1999.

In 2008, Newsday’s Sunday Sports Section received Top 10 honors from APSE on the strength of its Giants’ Super Bowl coverage as well as its coverage of Big Brown’s bid for the Triple Crown. In 2009, Winnicki directed the coverage of the Yankees’ 27th World Series title. He has played a pivotal role in increasing Newsday’s high school sports coverage both in print and online.
