Mid-Atlantic meeting set for April 18 in State College April 5, 2011
What: APSE Mid-Atlantic Region Meeting
When: Monday, April 18, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Where: Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, State College, Pa.
Registration: The meeting is open to APSE members and non-members. The fee is $25 and that includes a continental breakfast and lunch.

Hotel: The initial group rate has expired, but the cost actually has decreased. You should be able to get a room for about $85 plus tax. Call 800-233-7505 or www.pshs.psu.edu and select the Penn State Conference Center Hotel.
Agenda: By moving to the spring, we are hoping to increase participation. Please feel free to pass this along to anyone whom you think would be interested. Also, if anyone is interested in being on one of the panels, please let me know.

9:30-10:15 a.m.
“Say It with Infographics” A discussion of how to improve the look of your section and the way in which you provide information with graphics, along with increasing web traffic with interactive approaches. Panelists: John Duchenskie, graphics editor, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Paul Vigna, sports editor, Harrisburg Patriot-News. Moderator: Josh Barnett, executive sports editor, Philadelphia Daily News.
10:30-11:15 a.m.
“Issues in High Schools Coverage” Preps are a part of what we all do. Discussion will cover access, Internet rights, covering disciplinary issues and dealing with online competition. Panelists: Brad Cashman, executive director, Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association; Melissa Mertz, assistant director, PIAA; and Mike White, sports writer, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Moderator: Ben Brigandi, sports editor, Williamsport Sun-Gazette and APSE third vice president.
11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
“Finding and Keeping Young Readers”: Discussion led by Andrew Bergstein, associate director, Center for Sports Business & Research, Smeal College of Business at Penn State. Bergstein, whose father is a former Penn State football radio broadcaster, talks about his research into how to reach and retain young readers.
12:30 p.m.
Lunch and region meeting
1:30-2:30 p.m.
“Reverse Panel”: A Mid-Atlantic Region favorite created by Jerry Micco, from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Several students from Penn State’s journalism school serve as panelists, talk about their experiences and ask questions of sports editors in the audience. (This will involve moving to a larger room at the conference center since we are expecting a large number of students to join us in the audience). Moderator: Malcolm Moran, Knight Chair in Sports Journalism and Society, Penn State College of Communications.
