Julie Cart named AWSM’s Mary Garber Pioneer Award winner Dec. 16, 2009

Julie Cart has been selected as the 2010 Mary Garber Pioneer Award winner by the Association for Women in Sports Media.

Cart has been at the Los Angeles Times since 1983 and recently received journalism’s most coveted honor — the Pulitzer Prize. She was recognized in explanatory journalism for a series about fire fighting.

While she has been a national correspondent for the Times since 2002, a significant portion of her career was spent in sports. She spent nearly 15 years in the sports department at the Times, covering everything from the Olympics to the World Cup to Wimbledon. She’s been to Cuba to write about boxing, Argentina to write about soccer and South Africa to write about athletes under apartheid.

Cart has won Associated Press Sports Editors awards in investigative and enterprise reporting.

The Arizona State graduate, who started her career at the United Press International as a general assignment metro reporter in 1978, is also an AWSM charter member.

"Julie has been not only a pioneer in sports media but also a symbol of excellence," AWSM president Jenni Carlson said. "We are so thrilled to add her name to the distinguished list of Mary Garber Pioneer Award winners."

An AWSM member who nominated Cart said: "Julie’s work as a sportswriter and now an internationally recognized environmental writer has paved the way for future generations of women to fulfill their vast potential."

The Mary Garber Pioneer Award annually recognizes those who have paved the way and serve as role models for women in sports media. The award has been given annually since 1999 to those who have distinguished themselves in the field while reflecting and advancing the values and mission of AWSM.

It was renamed the Mary Garber Pioneer Award in 2006 to honor one of the industry’s original pioneers.

Cart will be honored during the Mary Garber Pioneer Award winner lunch at AWSM’s national convention. The 2010 Convention will be held from Thursday, April 29 to Saturday, May 1 at the Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles. The Pioneer lunch is tentatively scheduled for April 30.
