Arizona’s Mark Faller elected vice chair of West Region Nov. 6, 2009

Mark Faller, sports editor of the Arizona Republic since October 2003, was elected vice chair of the West Region at this month’s region meeting in Los Angeles.

It is Faller’s second stint as a region chair, having previously served as chair of the Northeast Region. Active in APSE since 1995, Faller was a sports editor at the Connecticut Post and Journal News in Westchester County, N.Y., before arriving in Phoenix.

For the past two years, he’s overseen sports content on the Republic’s website, azcentral.com, in addition to running the Republic’s print coverage. He was part of Gannett’s coverage team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, supervising a team of reporters covering hometown athletes for Gannett markets.

Faller, who lives in Cave Creek, Ariz., with his wife and two daughters, is scheduled to replace Lauren Gustus, sports editor of the Reno Gazette-Journal and the region’s current chair, in 2011. Faller is replacing Loren Nelson as vice chair. Nelson, formerly of the North County Times in Escondido, Calif., was elected at the national convention in Pittsburgh but subsequently left the industry.
