2012 APSE summer conference set for Chicago; 2013 event slated for Detroit Feb. 13, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS – Final commitments for the sites and primary sponsors of the 2012 and 2013 Associated Press Sports Editors summer conferences were determined Saturday at the general membership meeting.

The 2012 conference will be held in Chicago with Yahoo! Sports serving as the main sponsor. Dates of the event will be June 20-23. APSE Executive Director Jack Berninger and Second Vice President Gerry Ahern are in the process of evaluating hotels for the conference.

“We are thrilled to take on the leading role for Chicago,’ said Ahern, Yahoo! Sports’ managing editor for colleges and investigations. “Attendance at the previous convention in Chicago was outstanding and we expect another strong turnout in 2012.”

The Detroit Free Press will be the primary sponsor for the 2013 gathering with possible assistance from the Detroit News. Support from Free Press Editor and Publisher Paul Anger, who served as APSE president from 1994-95, was key to bolstering the Motor City bid.

“Let’s just say we are going to call it APSE in the D,” Gene Myers, sports editor of the Free Press said. “We expect everyone to be there and it will be a great time.”

Boston is the host city for the 2011 convention with the Boston Globe as the lead sponsor. The conference runs from June 22-25.
